The diagnostic value of parallel detection of cytokeratin 19 fragment-based tumor markers in malignant pleural effusion: a systematic review and meta-analysis

چکیده
Background: Cytokeratin 19 Fragment (CYFRA 21-1) is one of the commonly used tumor markers in clinical practice. The examination of CYFRA 21-1 in pleural effusions may help establish the diagnosis of Malignant Pleural Effusion (MPE). However, given the relatively low sensitivity, it is often used in combination with other tumor markers. Thus, we performed this systematic review and meta-analysis, aiming to explore the diagnostic performance of parallel diagnostic algorithms based on CYFRA 21-1 in

Introduction: Cancers are the most prevalent causes of exudative pleural effusions after para-pneumonic pleural effusions. Despite the combination of the pleural fluid cytological studies and pleural biopsy, diagnosis could not be reached in an important number of cases. In an attempt to improve the value of pleural fluid analysis in the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion, some studies...

STUDY OBJECTIVE To evaluate the diagnostic value of four different tumor markers: cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA 21-1) and neuron specific enolase (NSE) in patients with malignant and non-malignant pleural effusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred and two patients with pleural effusion treated in the University Hospital in Warsaw b...
متن کاملDiagnostic accuracy of tumour markers for malignant pleural effusion: a meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND The role of tumour markers such as carbohydrate antigen (CA) 125, CA 15-3, CA 19-9 and CYFRA 21-1 (a fragment of cytokeratin 19) in differentiating malignant pleural effusions (MPE) from benign effusions is not yet clear. METHODS After a systematic review of English language studies, sensitivity, specificity and other measures of accuracy of pleural concentrations of CA 125, CA 15-...
متن کاملCytokeratin 19 fragment/carcinoembryonic antigen ratio in pleural effusion is a useful marker for detecting malignant pleural mesothelioma.
BACKGROUND The clinical utility of tumour markers in pleural effusion is still controversial with regard to the efficient detection of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). PATIENTS AND METHODS The levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA 21-1) were retrospectively studied in pleural effusion of unknown origin in patients who had undergone medical thoracosco...

Background and purpose : Malignant and infectious diseases are the most frequent causes of pleural effusion. Malignant diseases produce pleural effusion through different mechanisms: lymphatic and capillary obstruction, pneumonia or atelectasia. Therefore absence of tumor cells in aspirated effusion, highly declines the sensivity of the cytologic study. For this reason, the use of tumor marke...
